Certified Medication Aide Practice

A Certified Nursing Assistant who wants to administer medications in a nursing home or assisted living facility needs one more credential on top of their CNA: the MACE, developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and administered through your state's board of nursing.

The 60 questions aren't spread evenly. Medication Administration, Observation, and Reporting alone is 36 of them, 60% of the exam, covering administration procedure, safety protocol, error reporting, and symptom observation. Medication Concepts and Measurements takes 12 (terminology, dosage, conversions, medication forms). Authorized Duties, the scope-of-practice and delegation material, is worth just 8.

Most candidates study concepts hardest because it feels like "real pharmacology." The exam disagrees: administration and reporting alone outweighs the other two domains combined, and that's where the bulk of your prep time earns the most return.

One naming note worth clearing up early: this is not the same credential as a Certified Medical Assistant, despite the shared "CMA" shorthand. A Medication Aide works in long-term care administering medications to residents. A Medical Assistant supports clinical and administrative work in an outpatient clinic. Different jobs, different certifying bodies, same three letters.

Passing score and fees are set by individual state boards, so confirm both with your state's MACE handbook before registering, same with retake policy if your first attempt doesn't go your way.
